What "on track" actually means and when burndown lies

The ideal line is just a straight line from total to zero over the sprint days. It assumes uniform burn rate which never happens in real sprints — you burn slow at the start and fast at the end as stories close.

Use burndown as a sanity check, not gospel. The real questions are: are stories actually closing, or just being half-finished? Is the burn driven by velocity or by descoping? A flat line for 4 days is usually a sign that nothing is closing — it does not mean the team is slow.
